The construction of the Weerayadi Anicut in the Galoya River in Kalmunai division, Ampara region was proposed as the existing anicut could not withstand to its optimum capacity due to the deteriorated structural conditions and heavy flooding experienced in the region. The main scope of the project included the construction of a reinforced concrete anicut on a pile foundation providing eighteen numbers of steel gates and gear arrangement.
